This innovation allows users to request assistance even when they are off the grid, with no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.
Users facing car troubles, such as being locked out, experiencing a flat tire, or running out of fuel or charge, can now contact a roadside service provider via satellite using their Apple devices. Apple explained on its support page that to utilize this feature, users need to be outside with a clear view of the sky and horizon, ensuring a reliable connection to the satellite. The experience of using satellite communication for assistance differs from the traditional cellular-based approach.

To access this feature, iPhone users must have iOS 17 or later to connect to AAA for roadside assistance, or iOS 17.2 or later with a Verizon SIM card to connect to Verizon for assistance. The process involves going to the Messages app, tapping the New Message button, starting a conversation, typing "Roadside" in the address field, and selecting the "roadside assistance" option when off the grid. Users can then follow onscreen instructions to connect to a satellite and request help.
Apple also clarified that international travelers visiting the US can leverage this feature during their stay, except those who purchased their iPhones in specific countries or regions.
