Baby John Movie Review: Varun Dhawan's Baby John Lacks Originality, Failing To Match Vijay Thalapathy's "Theri" Charm
The story shifts between Satya's current life as a devoted father and the flashbacks regarding his heroic past, climaxing with an all-out battle between good and evil.
Soon enough, however, does it all go to bits with Varun Dhawan trying to be too energetic while playing Baby John. Essentially, the remake of 2016 Tamil super hit Theri, the movie falters under the burden of excess. Directed by Kalees and produced by Atlee, Baby John does not hold much promise of creating any memorable action drama.
Storyline
The film is regarding Deputy Commissioner of Police Satya Verma (Varun Dhawan), an iconized crime-buster of Mumbai. He will face the psychopathic villain who termed himself as Babbar Sher. There is high-octane action sequence when Satya's life takes a dramatic turn when he encounters Meera, a house surgeon. A love story unfolds through musical interludes and family negotiations, finally leading them to marriage. The story shifts between Satya's current life as a devoted father and the flashbacks regarding his heroic past, climaxing with an all-out battle between good and evil.
Positive Points
The film has charm in bits and pieces thanks to Varun Dhawan's effortful performance and the quite unexpected role of a straight-faced cop by Rajpal Yadav. Action sequences, though derivative, do hold some visual appeal. Keerthy Suresh, in her Hindi debut, brings a lot of heart, despite limited material.

Negative Points
Baby John is all hackneyed situations and very little new. The movie seems to be aged in terms of the plot. The melodrama in the emotional climaxes does not enhance them. Music and the romantic numbers only seem to prolong the movie, weakening it. Moreover, the female characters in this movie seem to be more subservient to their relationship.
Overall
Baby John does have some interesting moments but ultimately leaves a bland taste in your mouth. Lacking in creativity and excessive reliance on formula storytelling, it fails to utilize the talent that Varun Dhawan can be as an action star.
