Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, known for his rulings on education issues in West Bengal, announced his resignation from the Calcutta High Court to pursue a political career. He cited a desire to directly address widespread corruption, particularly in the education sector, where he witnessed issues during his time on the bench.

In a media address, Gangopadhyay, who is due to retire later this year, stated his intention to resign on Tuesday and send his official resignation to the President. He highlighted his fight against corruption, especially in education and employment, including provident fund and labor law concerns. He believes judicial power wasn't enough to enact the change he desires, hence his move to politics.

His rulings garnered praise from certain groups, like aspiring educators, but also caused friction with the state's ruling party. Tensions arose between his single-judge bench and the court's division bench, culminating in the Supreme Court's intervention regarding a CBI probe into alleged irregularities.
