DPCC President Shri Arvinder Singh Lovely Encourages Congress Councillors To Support AAP Candidates
"If the AAP does not work for the people's interest, Congress will not shy away from raising its voice against the ruling AAP in the MCD as well," Shri Jitender Kumar Kochar added.
Shri Arvinder Singh Lovely, Committee President of Congress, has decided to support Aam Aadmi Party candidates Mahesh Khichi for Mayor and Ravindra Bhardwaj for Deputy Mayor elections of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi after holding discussions with senior leaders and the Congress Councillors. The elections will be held on April 26th.
Addressing a joint press conference at the DPCC office, Rajiv Bhawan, Chairman of the Communications Department and ex-MLA Shri Anil Bhardwaj, former Leader of the House in the MCD and Congress In-Charge in the Corporation Shri Jitender Kumar Kochar, and leader of Congress Councillors Smt. Nazia Danish emphasized that Shri Lovely has directed the Congress Councillors to vote for the AAP candidates. The reason behind this decision is that Congress does not want a repeat of the incident that took place during the Chandigarh mayoral election, which was later cancelled by the Supreme Court due to the malpractice committed by the presiding officer.
Shri Anil Bhardwaj stated that Congress wanted to protect the Constitution and democracy, which the BJP was trying to undermine, with all its might. Shri Anil Bhardwaj added that the sole purpose of Congress was the smooth functioning of the MCD for the greater good of the people, and for that, it was necessary to ensure the victory of the candidates nominated by the largest party in the MCD, AAP, which was also Congress’ India Alliance partners in the Lok Sabha elections. The spokesperson, Shri Anuj Attrey, was also present at the press conference.

Shri Jitender Kumar Kochar, former Leader of the House in the MCD and Congress In-Charge in the Corporation, said that the MCD did 90 per cent of Delhi’s work, but the BJP has deliberately obstructed the work of the Corporation by preventing the constitution of various committees such as the Standing Committee and Zonal Committees. He said that the delay in constituting the Standing Committee affected the financial matters of civic bodies, as funds above ₹5 crore require the panel’s approval. "If the AAP does not work for the people's interest, Congress will not shy away from raising its voice against the ruling AAP in the MCD as well," Shri Jitender Kumar Kochar added.
Smt. Nazia Danish, Leader of the Congress in the MCD, said that the hindrance in the work of the MCD has led to the suffering of poor people as no word was being done in the areas where they were living. She highlighted that due to the BJP’s strong-arm tactics, the councillors were not allowed to raise questions related to the development and people’s welfare in the MCD House.
