The legendary ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas passed away at the age of 72 on February 26, 2024, after battling a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. Reports suggest he had been fighting cancer and had been keeping a low profile in recent months.

His family shared the news in a statement: "With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February due to a prolonged illness." His funeral rites are scheduled for February 27.

Udhas, born into a musical family in Jetpur, Gujarat, followed in the footsteps of his elder brother, Manhar Udhas, who was already a renowned playback singer in Bollywood. While he initially explored film songs and pop music, it was his captivating ghazal renditions that truly captivated audiences.

His debut ghazal album "Aahat" in 1980 marked the beginning of a remarkable four-decade career. He released over 60 solo albums and numerous collaborations, leaving behind a rich musical legacy.

Renowned for his melodious voice and deep understanding of ghazal poetry, Udhas is credited with popularizing the genre and making it accessible to a wider audience. Beloved hits like "Chitthi Aai Hai" and "Aa Gale Lag Ja" cemented his status as a leading ghazal maestro.
