Kalki 2898 AD Review: Prabhas' Latest Big Project Falls Flat
Particularly problematic is the first half of Kalki 2898 AD. It’s slow-paced and stretched out resulting in unnecessary dragging of the narrative.
Kalki 2898 AD, the much-anticipated film featuring a stellar cast including Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan, unfortunately falls short of expectations. Despite the star power and high hopes surrounding the film, it turns out to be an underwhelming cinematic experience.
In this role, Prabhas is miscast although he has been widely known for his charismatic and versatile performances. He seems to grapple with detaching himself from his usual persona in films and being an inherently funny and endearing character which might have affected him adversely in such kind of a movie. This character portrayal does not go deep enough or show enough intense emotion making it feel flat and unconvincing.
Particularly problematic is the first half of Kalki 2898 AD. It’s slow-paced and stretched out resulting in unnecessary dragging of the narrative. With a sluggish progression and lack of engaging plot points, one may find it hard to stay invested in it. This sluggish start sets a tone that the film never quite manages to overcome, leaving viewers yearning for more excitement and engagement.
As opposed to this Deepika Padukone as well as Amitabh Bachchan put forward good performances. Her usual poise and strength come through in her role while Amitabh Bachchan’s way of portraying Ashwatthama ranks among his best roles ever played so far on screen bringing forth his seasoned acting prowess during the process. Despite brilliant work from these two veteran actors, Kalki 2898 AD still feels like it is lacking something in its storytelling.
VFX is a rare high of Kalki 2898 AD and ultimately makes the cinematic experience of the viewers much better. Despite its flaws in storytelling, Kalki 2898 is a masterpiece in terms of visuals and is a massive upgrade on some other big-budget films that use VFX. The world-building of Kalki 2898 AD seems more realistic because of VFX as well and it perfectly reflects the ambition of the director.

However, in spite of the commendable vision by the director and impressive VFX, this film is quite disappointing. Kalki 2898 AD is not a movie that one would miss much if one decides to skip it. The movie promised so much but delivered only average entertainment. It’s a narrative that could have been compelling and thought-provoking but it turns out lifeless and unimaginative.
It does not live up to its marketing campaign’s hype or expectations. Nonetheless, despite their contributions to this film, nothing new has been brought about in the field of science fiction. If you are anticipating a capturing and thrilling cinematic experience it might not be the best movie for you to watch.
