Seeking redemption, Sambudi followed Krishna's advice and performed rigorous penance for Lord Surya at the location of the Konark Surya Temple. As a result, a massive magnet, weighing about 52 tons, was placed in the temple's sanctum sanctorum. Foreign sailors, misunderstanding the temple's magnetic effect on their navigation systems, are said to have contributed to the temple's destruction during their visits.
