Lt. Governor Displayed Sensitivity By Forwarding The POCSO Public Prosecutor Appointment Matter To Union Home Ministry: Virendra Sachdeva
New Delhi: According to Mr. Virendra Sachdeva, the President of Delhi BJP, the Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi has been criticized for its lack of action in ensuring the safety of women and girls and providing swift justice for crimes against them. Despite the government's claims of prioritizing women's safety, little has been done to address the issue effectively.
The BJP President pointed out that cases related to crimes against minor girls have been regularly reported in Delhi. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the Delhi Police, these cases have not been resolved promptly due to a shortage of public prosecutors.
In the previous year, a trial court ordered the Delhi Government's Home Department to prepare a file for the appointment of Special Public Prosecutors to expedite the disposal of Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) cases. However, for the past nine months, the file has been circulating among different departments of the Delhi Government without any decision being made.
It is highly disheartening that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been aware of this matter since January 2023 but has failed to provide immediate approval. Instead, the file has been consistently delayed and has now been sitting in the Chief Minister's office since May 8. The BJP President finds it shameful that while Kejriwal has been extensively traveling and meeting with other leaders across the country, he has neglected to address the urgent need for a public prosecutor to handle criminal cases involving minor girls.
This insensitivity displayed by Chief Minister Kejriwal indicates that his government merely makes empty promises regarding women's safety and crime prevention, without taking concrete actions to support them.
Mr. Virendra Sachdeva appreciates the proactive decision of Lieutenant Governor Shri Vinay Kumar Saxena, who, utilizing his special powers, has forwarded the file regarding the appointment of a Special Public Prosecutor for POCSO cases to the Union Home Ministry. He views this decision as a sensitive step towards resolving the issue.
