They have even found their way into European and Middle Eastern markets.
Meghalaya's efforts have propelled it to be among the top five pineapple-producing states in India, with its pineapples gaining recognition for minimal pesticide and heavy metal residue. The government's interventions, including supporting farmer collectives, building value addition infrastructure, and forming farmer cooperatives, have revitalized the agriculture sector. Over 350 collectives have been established, transforming the way produce is traded. Institutional trading has led to higher income for farmers, who now sell by weight, benefiting from increased prices per kilogram.
The state has extended its agricultural focus to other products like turmeric, ginger, mandarin, honey, and black pepper. Collaborations with international organizations and the establishment of processing units and infrastructure have contributed to these successes.
The Meghalaya Pineapple Fest encapsulates not only the vibrancy of Meghalaya's agriculture but also its unity, culture, and economic aspirations. It serves as a testament to the state's dedication to sustainable practices, innovation, and community-led growth in the agricultural sector.
