Meta Received 9,226 Reports Via Indian Grievance Mechanism On Instagram For Content Moderation

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has released its monthly compliance report in line with India's IT Rules 2021. The report reveals that the company took down over 38.4 million pieces of content across 13 policies for Facebook and over 4.61 million pieces of content across 12 policies for Instagram in India during March.

The company received 7,193 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism during this period, and it provided tools for users to resolve their issues in 1,903 cases. These tools include pre-established channels to report content for specific violations, self-remediation flows where users can download their data, and avenues to address account hacked issues.

On Instagram, the company received 9,226 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism, and it provided tools for users to resolve their issues in 4,280 cases. Of the other 4,946 reports where specialized review was needed, Meta reviewed content and took action on 1,656 reports in total. The remaining 3,290 reports on Instagram were reviewed but may not have been actioned.

Under the IT Rules 2021, big digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users are required to publish monthly compliance reports. Meta measures the number of pieces of content it takes action on for going against its standards, which may include removing content or covering photos or videos that may be disturbing to some audiences with a warning.

The report demonstrates Meta's commitment to adhering to the IT Rules 2021 in India. The company has been facing increasing pressure from the Indian government to comply with the rules, which seek to regulate the content that is shared on digital and social media platforms. The rules also require platforms to appoint a chief compliance officer, a nodal contact person, and a resident grievance officer in India.

In conclusion, Meta's monthly compliance report reveals the company's efforts to maintain compliance with India's IT Rules 2021. The report highlights the tools provided to users to address their concerns and the company's commitment to taking action on content that violates its policies. The report also indicates the challenges the company faces in reviewing content and taking action on reports.
