Dr. Manmohan Singh, the last prime minister of India representing India, made an emotional appeal to the voters of Punjab just a few days before the last phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with a three-page open letter. In his letter, the ex-Prime Minister of India has requested that voters protect democracy and the constitution with the final chance that they are given.

Manmohan Singh, who oversaw economic liberalization in 1991 as Finance Minister and served as Governor of the Reserve Bank, contrasted key socio-economic moments from his Congress-led UPA government with those of the BJP's tenure. Singh criticized the BJP's economic management, citing the demonetization debacle, flawed GST implementation, and mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which he said resulted in subpar GDP growth of six to seven percent.
Under the Congress-led UPA, GDP growth averaged about eight percent, according to Singh.

Referencing World Bank data, Singh noted the UPA's peak GDP growth of 8.5 percent in 2010 and contrasted it with the BJP's record, which saw growth fall to -5.8 percent during the pandemic.
He also highlighted unprecedented unemployment and inflation under the BJP, which he claimed have widened economic inequality to a 100-year high. Talking about the farmers' protests, Manmohan Singh criticized the harsh response from the government and Narendra Modi's negative comments about farmers. He shed light on the UPA's support for farmers through loan waivers and increased MSP, and he made a promise that Congress is committed to making legal guarantees for MSP and other supportive measures.

Finally, Singh criticized the BJP's Agnipath military recruitment scheme and Modi's divisive rhetoric, urging Punjab's voters to draw on their warrior spirit to protect the nation from forces of discord. Dr.
