PM Vishwakarma Scheme: PM Modi's Unwavering Dedication To Empower & Elevate Traditional Artisans
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the "PM Vishwakarma" scheme in commemoration of 'Vishwakarma Jayanti,' specifically designed to empower and support traditional artisans in India. The launch event took place at the India International Convention and Expo Centre in Dwarka, New Delhi, marking a momentous occasion for the country's artisanal community. This initiative, as announced on the 77th Independence Day, reflects the government's commitment to preserving and uplifting traditional craftsmanship while fostering cultural heritage and local artistry.
The "PM Vishwakarma" scheme goes beyond merely providing financial assistance; it seeks to safeguard age-old traditions, cultural practices, and the rich heritage embodied in local products, art, and crafts. The scheme has received full funding from the Union Government, with an impressive allocation of Rs 13,000 crore, demonstrating the seriousness of its commitment to the cause.
One of the pivotal aspects of this scheme is the registration of 'Vishwakarma,' skilled artisans who create using their hands and tools. The registration process is facilitated through Common Services Centres, utilizing the biometric-based 'PM Vishwakarma' portal. These artisans and craftspeople will receive formal recognition in the form of a PM Vishwakarma certificate and an ID card, further legitimizing their craft.

However, the "PM Vishwakarma" scheme doesn't stop at registration. It offers comprehensive support to artisans, encompassing skill enhancement through basic and advanced training programs. Additionally, artisans will receive a toolkit incentive of Rs 15,000, enabling them to acquire the necessary tools and equipment to enhance their craft. The scheme provides collateral-free credit support up to Rs 1 lakh (first tranche) and Rs 2 lakh (second tranche) at a concessional interest rate of 5 percent, ensuring financial stability for artisans to invest in their businesses.
Recognizing the importance of digital transactions in today's world, the scheme offers incentives for digital transactions, promoting financial inclusion and ease of doing business for artisans. Furthermore, it extends marketing support to help artisans reach a wider audience, thereby increasing their market visibility.
The "PM Vishwakarma" scheme is designed to benefit artisans and craftspeople in both rural and urban areas across India. By offering a holistic support system encompassing registration, skill enhancement, financial assistance, digital incentives, and marketing support, the scheme aims to empower artisans, revitalize traditional crafts, and contribute to the preservation of India's rich cultural heritage. It represents a significant step towards ensuring that the legacy of skilled craftsmanship endures and thrives in the modern world.
