The UK's Conservative Party made a decisive move on Saturday by suspending one of its former deputy chairmen from the parliamentary group due to his refusal to retract remarks labeled as Islamophobic. The pressure had been building on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Tories following the contentious comments made by lawmaker Lee Anderson on Friday, which drew widespread criticism for their racist undertones.
Anderson's remarks targeted Sadiq Khan, the Labour mayor of London, alleging that he was under the influence of Islamists. These comments sparked significant backlash, particularly against the backdrop of escalating incidents of Islamophobia and anti-Semitism in the UK since the Gaza conflict last October.
A spokesperson for Tory lawmaker Simon Hart announced Anderson's suspension from the Conservative whip, citing his failure to apologize for the controversial remarks. As the chief whip, Hart is responsible for maintaining discipline within the Conservative Party.
During an appearance on the right-wing GB News channel, Anderson claimed that Islamists had gained control over Khan, who made history as London's first Muslim mayor in 2016. Anderson's remarks accused Khan of essentially ceding control of the capital city to his associates, drawing condemnation from various political quarters. Labour Party chairwoman Anneliese Dodds condemned the comments as "unambiguously racist and Islamophobic," while prominent Conservative figures such as business minister Nus Ghani, senior backbencher Sajid Javid, and Tory peer Gavin Barwell also criticized Anderson's remarks, with Barwell describing them as a "despicable slur."
The Muslim Council of Britain joined the chorus of condemnation, labeling Anderson's remarks as "disgusting" and extremist. Khan himself denounced the comments as "anti-Muslim" and "racist," expressing disappointment at the perceived silence from Sunak and other senior ministers, which he interpreted as an implicit endorsement of racism.
In response to Khan's criticism and the mounting pressure, Hart's office swiftly announced Anderson's suspension from the party. Consequently, Anderson will now serve as an independent lawmaker in parliament. As of the issuance of the statement, Anderson had not publicly commented on the decision.
