At the 2024 Annual Brand Conference, Volkswagen India made a significant announcement, unveiling the eagerly anticipated ID.4 ahead of its official launch. This move marks Volkswagen's foray into the electric vehicle (EV) segment in India, aligning with the global trend towards sustainable mobility solutions. Alongside this groundbreaking debut, Volkswagen introduced a lineup of other notable vehicles, including the Taigun GT Plus Sport, Taigun GT Line, and Virtus GT Plus Sport.
Positioned as a formidable contender in the EV market, the Volkswagen ID.4 shares a similar size profile with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, offering a compelling option for consumers seeking eco-friendly alternatives. One of its standout features is the flexibility it offers in terms of powertrain configurations, catering to diverse driving preferences and performance requirements.
Under the hood, the ID.4 is built on Volkswagen's Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) platform, boasting a range of powertrain options to suit varying needs. The lineup includes both single and dual-motor setups, each delivering a distinct driving experience. The single-motor variant is equipped with a 58kWh battery pack, while the dual-motor version, known as the ID.4 GTX, boasts a larger 77kWh battery pack.

Performance-wise, the ID.4 impresses with its dynamic capabilities, thanks to the combined output of its dual-motor setup. The rear motor generates approximately 200bhp and 310Nm of torque, complemented by the front motor producing around 110bhp and 162Nm of torque. This configuration enables the ID.4 to accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in a brisk 6.2 seconds, demonstrating performance on par with renowned internal combustion engine (ICE) models like the Golf GTI.
Moreover, the ID.4 offers a commendable WLTP-claimed driving range of 479km on a full charge, ensuring ample range to meet everyday driving needs without compromising on efficiency or convenience. This extended range capability positions the ID.4 as a practical choice for urban commuting as well as longer journeys, bolstering its appeal to a wide range of consumers.

Looking ahead, Volkswagen has ambitious plans for its electric vehicle lineup, aiming to triple sales of purely electric models and striving to become the global leader in electric mobility by 2025. To support this vision, the company has committed substantial investments of approximately 46 billion euros in electric mobility and hybridization initiatives. Additionally, Volkswagen aims to achieve up to 70 per cent penetration of purely electric vehicles in Europe by 2030, underlining its unwavering commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.
